50 Cent - Sincerely Yours, Southside
alright, alright.. tadillac's been feeding us with some new hip-hop for 08 and i think it's time i share one of my picks for mixtape of the year..
i've never really liked 50 Cent after "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" but our homie Elow put us onto this mixtape which came out in june.. and damn, this dude really put out something that's undeniably hip-hop.
it's made me look at him differently as an artist and appreciate his creativity in bringing this music back to its roots. while his content is still wack and reactionary, his form and flow is off the hook and it's just plain fun to listen to!
from anything, we can always take what's good and leave what's wack..
sincerely,
ET

"Jonathan Jackson" by Chris Iijima, Nobuko Miyamoto & Charlie Chin (SONG Blog)
growing up listening to my mom's "a grain of sand" LP i always played the same 3 songs and "jonathan jackson" was not one of them. it wasn't until i got schooled on the black panther party, george jackson and his brother jonathan that i realized the meaning behind the song.
during her interview for the film, nobuko explained how "jonathan jackson" was created:

Blogging at 2:33am means only 1 thing...
PROCRASTINATION. I have a serious case of it this quarter. I just spent 2 and a half hours going from blog link to blog link and the only way I can think of stopping it right now is to finally blog about it.
Blogs and links are a bad combo if you're a student. There are some really, REALLY good blogs we're linked up to though. If you're not linked up to them already, I say go through that left column under "Blogs that are better than this one" and peep ALL OF THEM cause they're all worth reading/viewing/listening to. I got to say that my pick for the night has to go to Kiwi's blog. His adventures just inspired to buy a new, non-department store bike... and to read a new book. I guess I should get my paper back on screen now before I get tempted to start googling "what to look for in a bike" and books by the writer of "The Alchemist."
...It's MassMovementTV. Damn, it's 3 o'clock now.

Nasty Nas
last wednesday amanda got free tickets to see nas at the brand new club nokia and she took me! i can't say i'm as big of a nas fan as e.t. but i've always kept up with him and his recent political consciousness has re-earned my respect for him (i lost it with oochie wally). the show was dope, he performed everything people came to hear. more than his stage stamina, i was impressed the most by his sincere humility and encouragement of young artists.
i know, its almost sacrilegious not to list a track from illmatic as my favorite song of the night but fuck it "if i ruled the world" is my shit:
pacific division opened the show. these doods are one of the illest groups to recently come out l.a. don't sleep on pac d!

Jesus Christ & GMA 2gether like Green Eggs & Jufran
While googling some statistics on the poverty levels in the Philippines, I stumbled upon some of these paintings by an artist of the name, Joey Velasco. Although I'm not too religious, I think these pieces are kind of interesting considering the impact Catholicism has had on the Philippines (the northern part at least). I've been a bad Filipino Catholic as of late but I'm sure that will change during the time I'm home for the holidays (thanks Mommy).
This one is one of my favorites. It's entitled: "I will make you a Fisher of men."
Another reason why I think these are kinda interesting is that most of these pictures illustrate the Filipino youth helping out Jesus instead of the other way around. Hmm...
On a more reality-based, in your face, socio-political-economic-USimperialist-Philippines puppet regime (I really needed to take this break from writing this paper) note:
I betcha that what's she actually looks like too when she and her cronies count the money.

i hate on celebrity news and i hate on private schools especially religious ones BUT this story really caught my eye. maybe its because i don't have a problem with the superstars in the piece or maybe i can just relate to a kid sparking a name for himself while in his father's shadow...or maybe its just high school football!

Progressive Guide to the CA Propositions & "The Poster Maker"

Vote No On Prop. 4 - Protect Teen Health and Safety
with all the hype and excitement around the presidential election on Nov. 4th, don't sleep on the crucial propositions on the ballot. if anything remember to vote no on prop 4, no on prop 6 & 9, and no on prop 8.
one of the most dangerous is prop. 4 which would force doctors to notify the parents of a minor who intends to terminate her pregnancy. healthy resources and support for pregnant teens are already limited and this law would make it even harder for young women to receive them. this proposition has been put on the ballot and was defeated twice already. the most fucked-up part of this initiative is that the people who will be most effected by this law (teenage girls) can't even vote on it.
the young women of khmer girls in action made a PSA about prop. 4. even-though they can't vote, these sista's are making sure their voices are heard:
the video might be a little rough but shit, when i was their age i was still trying to light my farts on fire.

"I'm afraid if he wins, the blacks will take over"
Dang, y'all.. The racists come out at night, and during the day too! A lot of liberals tend to avoid discussing the issue of race and racism in today's society, but this election is sharpening the contradictions and revealing the true state of America for all to see.
It's absurd how the Republican propaganda comes alive and unleashes the racist beliefs of their supporters.. They really believe that shit!!
OHIO - People at a Sarah Palin rally let you know how they really feel about "negroes"..
