I know how it sounds when people say they read playboy for the articles, but I really do watch some flicks just for the music. As a kid bred on hip hop I rely on films and their soundtracks to introduce me to different artists. Even if the film is not the greatest, the soundtrack can almost save it, especially with those "I have White people problems" type joints, think Garden State or The Last Kiss. So when your 12 year-old cousin asks you to see the new Twilight movie, peep the soundtrack before you say no. Death Cab, Thom, Lykke Li, Grizzly Bear, Sea Wolf..I'm just sayin.

Introducing Band Of Brothers!

the  2 year-old music phenom mina loy (who also happens to be my niece) just dropped the first song with her new group "band of brothers".  the group is made up of mina's cooler-than-ice cousins isabel, jack and nick.  they were just booked for the halftime show at game 7 of the nba finals but since that game is unlikely to happen they have agreed to let mass movement tv premiere their self-titled debut song!

my brother-in-law david checel's new movie next day air is opening in theaters tomorrow.  he cut the whole film!  its directed by benny boom who's done music videos for everyone including snoop, nas, and 50.  if that doesn't sell you then here's the white man co-sign, roger ebert gave the film a great review.

Fatgums X Bambu - A Peaceful Riot

folks are always asking me "where all the JA's in hip-hop at?", the answer...fatgums! the highly anticipated fatgums and bambu collabo is finally gonna drop next week! ever since the duo showcased their chemistry on bam's latest album "exact change", rumors of an exclusive ep have been brewing. medical student by day and producer by night, fatgums has created a distinct, soulful sound to cure the t-painful auto-tune plague. a long-time bambu fan himself, gums told me that this project has been a dream come true. *just a little known fact, the first time these two collaborated was on this track created for my film pilgrimage: Bambu - "Pilgrimage Song" (Produced by Fatgums) DOWNLOAD

"War Of The Flea" (Senz of Depth Remix Feat. Bambu)

here's another leak from the upcoming a song for ourselves mixtape (slated to drop next week!). this track is a remix of "war of the flea" (a grain of sand) by the phenomenal producer senz of depth. bambu insightfully draws the parallels between the political climate of chris iijima's era and now... senz of depth is just one of the many projects of the talented musician miles senzaki. i've been lucky enough to have been able to collaborate with miles on all three of my films. for a song for ourselves he flawlessly re-created the instrumentals of some of chris iijima's songs, miles explains the evolution of the remix here. his debut album under the senz of depth alias titled "boundary waters" will blow your mind! here's just a sample of what i'm talking about: -tadillac

"Grapvine Fires" by Death Cab For Cutie

as if this year wasn't bad enough, the southland continues to burn. the flames provide a symbolic backdrop to where our country and environment seem to be headed. during these political and economic times it's hard to see the beauty in the world and easy to get discouraged, even defeated. lately, one of my favorite song writers has been ben gibbard of death cab. his songs can get pretty emo, but he replaces the cheese with grounded reality. more than anything i appreciate the space his songs provide for your own interpretations, projections, imagery and memories...something that all works of art strive to do. here's one of my favorite tracks of their new album "narrow stairs": "Grapevine Fires" by Death Cab For Cutie DOWNLOAD this song helped me remember that times like this: can lead to times like this: keep ya head up! -tadillac
