Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo arrives in Chicago today. Makes you wonder what she's up to. The
Philippine press is running wild with stories of how Arroyo has tried to call Obama twice since his victory last Tuesday, but she has yet to receive a return call.
However, Obama has found the time to accept congratulatory calls from 9 presidents and prime ministers of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and Great Britain.
Arroyo is being called an
Obama stalker, desperately running after him to offer her congratulations. But of course, her main objective to make sure that the U.S. piggy bank is still freely flowing to support her corrupt and oppressive regime and to provide weapons and training for the Philippine military.
It seems Obama is wary to associate himself with Arroyo and the 933 political killings and 199 enforced disappearances she has overseen in her 7 years of office. Or at least, that's what it seems like at this early stage in the game. He wouldn't want to contradict his message of hope and change by meeting with one of the world's staunchest Bush supporters.
But will he eventually resume business as usual and continue the colonial relationship with the Philippines? It's hard to tell, but we all have to make the effort to keep President Obama accountable to his promises of change and progress.
We've made it past the threat of McCain. But the struggle for genuine change and accountability has only just begun. It's up to all of us to put in work and make sure progress happens. Don't let Obama let us down..
